Everywhen: Contemporary Aboriginal Art

VOLTA’s 2026 thematic Pavilion endeavours to tell the powerful stories of contemporary Aboriginal artists. Anchored in the concept of “Everywhen,” the Pavilion explores the Indigenous concept of time as a continuum in which the past, present and future coexist simultaneously. With a past extending more than 65,000 years, the Pavilion will connect VOLTA visitors with these ancient histories, ancestral mythologies, cultural traditions, and the vibrant contemporary art practices being created today. Many of the featured artists are recognised in major institutional collections, including Tate Modern, the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, the Vatican City, and the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne

GalerieArts d’Australie (Australia) represents Konstantina (Kate Constantine), a Gadigal woman of the Eora nation and a neocontemporary Indigenous artist. Knight Fine Art (Australia) presents five Indigenous artists, pairing foundational figures like Clifford Possum Tiapaltiarri, Emily Kame Kngwarreye, and Tommy Watson with contemporary voices Arthur Jalyirri Dixon and Tanya Van Horen. Bay Gallery Home (UK), is the UK’s only dedicated gallery to represent Aboriginal artists. A female led gallery trusted by remote Aboriginal communities of the Northern Territory, representing their paintings and creating an Aboriginal interiors collection. The gallery will present a wide variety of indigenous art providing a journey through Central Desert, Arnhem land and Tiwi communities. Other galleries include Atelier du Temps(Switzerland), KG Contemporary (Switzerland), Coe Contemporary and Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery (UK) representing Naomi Hobson.

Everywhen: Contemporary Aboriginal Art is curated by VOLTA Artistic Director Lee Cavaliere, and advised by a community of curators and experts in Indigenous art, including Rebecca Hossack, Stèphane Jacob, Jasmine Coe, Sixtine Crutchfield, Dr Catherine Kineweskwêw Richardson, Theresa Burkhardt, Shonae Hobson, Gautier Chiarini, Rob Russell, Swisspeace and Emilia Galatis. VOLTA’s Artistic Director, Lee Cavaliere, highlights the significance of this year’s 21st edition, stating that:

“The fair returns to Basel for a 21st edition with renewed energy and vigour, as we see the emerging and mid-career artists retaining incredible energy across the international art market. With renewed optimism, we celebrate and reaffirm our core ethos: platforming underrepresented voices and engaging with the societal concerns reflected in the work of our presenting artists.”

About VOLTA Art Fairs

As a globally recognised contemporary art fair, VOLTA powers artistic discovery and is part of the Ramsay Fairs group. Founded in 2005 in Basel, the fair presents art collectors with the opportunity to discover and connect with international artists and their stories. With VOLTA, art collectors and art enthusiasts can acquire emerging artistic talent and work that reflects the changing world we live in.

At its heart, VOLTA is about the power of community coming together in real life. As an internationally focussed fair, VOLTA brings together a diverse range of artists and gallerists from across the globe to one place, one moment, during Art Week in Basel. It is the springboard for the upward trajectory of many. These stories reflect the world that we live in – its environmental, societal challenges, its beauty and hope and stories of global identities and dialogues within these contexts. The fair has long been a springboard for emerging talent and an incubator for ideas that shape the future of contemporary art.

About Fondation Burkhardt-Felder

In 2008, the Fondation Burkhardt-Felder opened its museum dedicated to Australian Aboriginal Art. Drawing on a collection assembled by its founders Gérard and Theresa Burkhardt-Felder, it promotes contemporary art of First Nations Australians. The museum, located in Môtiers, in the heart of Val-de-Travers (Neuchâtel/Switzerland), invites the public to discover the remarkable diversity and singularity of ‘the last great artistic movement of the 20th century’ (Robert Hughes).

The Fondation Burkhardt-Felder and its museum of Australian Aboriginal Art is honoured to be a cultural partner of VOLTA's 2026 Pavilion, and excited to participate in the promotion of First Nation Australians’ art during this exceptional fair.

About This is Basel

The organization showcases the city’s museums, festivals, and contemporary cultural programming through curated storytelling.
