MEET THE GALLERY is an interview series highlighting returning exhibitors and first-time VOLTA galleries. More than simply experts, these VOLTA exhibitors are supporters of young and mid-career artists and provide insights on their presentation at the fair.
CAM Galeria is nestled between the rich cultural and commercial worlds in the vibrant Polanco district of Mexico City. Founded in 2017 by Diego García, Sofía Creel and Daniela Carrasco, the three were united in promoting contemporary art that reflects Mexico’s rich cultural history and stage it to the international market. In May, CAM Galeria joins us at VOLTA New York for the first time. We spoke to Diego to find out what artists they’ll be showcasing and the unique artwork that will be on offer.
Diego, it is a pleasure to welcome you to Volta Voices. Let’s start with introductions…

Diego García : Daniela, Sofia, and I founded CAM Galeria in 2017. We are all collectors and have a strong connection with art. We saw a need in the Mexican market for a space with more openness - somewhere for artists and a friendlier front for new collectors. We know how intimidating entering a gallery can be, so we decided early on that we wanted to be a gallery where everyone would feel comfortable, whilst, of course, retaining quality and offering the best platform for Spanish-speaking artists.
A value of your work as a gallery is to promote art collecting in Mexico. What challenges are there for collectors in the country?
Diego García: Mexico is a growing and developing economy, and whilst this is very good, art has been only for a very select group. A mission for ours is to introduce a financial culture for art and art appreciation for a wider population.
Every time we engage in a new relationship at CAM we take the time to explain what we are showing in the gallery and always let our collectors know their questions are valid. We like to invite them to meet the artists and start their own conversations too. This makes everyone feel like they are a part of something special that we are creating together.
What is it that drew you to exhibit with VOLTA for the first time?
Diego García: Mexico's culture is very rich and because of this, the world has always turned to us – whether that be for holidays, the rich colours associated with our culture, food or drink. We want to invite international collectors and art lovers to see what we have to offer from the artists we represent. It is our mission to position our artists worldwide. The US is a very important market for us to develop into, and with VOLTA’s fair in Basel, the possibilities are a more international reach. But we had several recommendations from others too!
Looking ahead to 2023 and beyond, which artists are exciting you most?
Diego García: We are very excited about Alejandra España and Daniel Berman, two of the artists we will be showcasing at VOLTA who are both very strong visually and driven in their artistic practice. In 2022 they both won grants and were invited to exhibit internationally with Alejandra exhibiting at a solo show in Poland and Daniel being part of an exhibition in Boston, US.
We think it is the right historical moment for people to receive Latin American art and to better understand it.

CAM Galería was founded in 2017 by Diego García, Sofía Creel and Daniela Carrasco, located in the culturally rich CDMX in Polanco. Championing Mexican art and the artistic landscape there, the gallery currently supports 11 incredible artists.
