The 5,000 Edit: Four Perspectives on Collecting Emerging Art
VOLTA introduces The 5,000 Edit: a curated selection of artworks priced at and under CHF 5,000. The 5,000 Edit reflects VOLTA’s longstanding commitment to the emerging market - creating opportunities to discover new artists and make informed, meaningful acquisitions. Developed in response to the thriving under $50,000 segment of the market, as highlighted in the co-produced report ‘The Art Market Under $50,000 by Ramsay Fairs, VOLTA and ArtTactic, the initiative offers an entry point for new and evolving collectors, while supporting artists at a pivotal stage in their practice.
Bringing together over 30 galleries, The 5,000 Edit presents a diverse selection of works available to discover at the fair and online.
To explore the selection through different lenses, we invited four members of the VOLTA community to share their perspectives: two interior designers, a Basel-based architect and cultural tastemaker, and a contemporary art consultant. Drawing on their distinct professional backgrounds, each has selected a work from The 5,000 Edit that speak to their interests, offering inspiration for both first-time buyers and seasoned collectors alike.

“I was drawn to Chuma Adam’s work because it resists the immediacy and visual overstatement that characterises so much emerging contemporary painting today. Although her practice enters into dialogue with broader histories of abstraction and questions of perception and identity, the work itself feels remarkably restrained and psychologically grounded”.

Chuma Adam (b. 2024, Johannesburg) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice investigates theintersections of Black identity, womanhood, and self-actualization. Drawing heavily from Édouard Glissant’s theory of opacity, Adam uses painting, printmaking, and sculpture to navigate the 'intangible complexities' of the self. Her work is deeply tactile; she incorporates sand and soil from her maternal home into earth-toned palettes, using repetitive mark-making to document a 'cosmic quest'.

“My choice was entirely intuitive. Going through the whole selection, this was the one I immediately wanted to set apart — I just like its freshness and its geometry. Only later I learned how Ladjusic works: layers of paint applied and removed, again and again, until the lines appear on their own. There is something quietly moving in that contradiction - a composition that looks effortless, built through enormous patience. For someone beginning to collect, I would not look for a 'safe' first piece. It should be something that catches the eye before it catches the mind”.

“As an architect, I was immediately drawn to its spatial quality and the architectural composition of the work. I love how it feels both delicate and industrial at the same time…Almost like a fragmented cityscape suspended in time. The layering, rhythm, and verticality of the stainless steel elements create something that feels both structured and emotional, which really resonated with me personally.

David Moreno (b.1978, Barcelona) whose work bridges architecture and sculpture to explore the spatial dynamics of human experience. Trained as an architect, Moreno soon shifted his focus entirely to art, translating architectural thinking into three-dimensional sculptures that resemble floating cities, intricate houses, and cascading villages. Using thick steel rods, piano wires, and cross-hatched frameworks, he creates forms that oscillate between rigidity and fluidity, evoking both the precision of technical drawings and the freedom of hand-drawn sketches.

"I was immediately drawn to this piece for its amazing colour palette and expressive texture. The sunset tones, vibrant turquoise greens and beautiful mark-making create a striking sense of atmosphere and depth. There is an echo of Hockney in its visual language, while also reflecting the work of contemporary artists such as Hervin Anderson, whose exploration of place and identity feels particularly relevant today. The subject matter is one that I find myself continually returning to, but this is an especially compelling interpretation - thoughtful, contemporary and beautifully executed."
