The exhibition tuchfühlen — degrees of intimacy — presents new works by Swiss artist Rochus Lussi at Galerie Vitrine in Lucerne, Switzerland.

Being cheek to cheek, or rather, cheek by jowl

“Visitors announce themselves by knocking on the door. Knowing who knocks, we invite them as guests into our home.

Not knowing who knocks, the door creates a bulwark, protecting against an unwanted visitation.”

Rochus Lussi’s work is driven by the vista between vulnerability and defenselessness. In addition to the work “Door Knocker”, the exhibition shows two groups of objects: a pack of wolves and 150 breastlike “Agatha Brötli”, a bread dedicated to St. Agatha of Catania and eaten traditionally on February 5. The invocation of the saint is meant to prevent a certain burning sensation in the chest, better understood as homesickness.

Artist Rochus Lussi

Rochus Lussi, born 1965 in Stans, Switzerland, is a sculptor, performance artist, curator and art teacher. He is the winner of the Central Swiss Cultural Prize in 2019.

Lussi creates groups of wooden objects, gatherings, scenes and constellations. He forms objects into ornamental fields, where the repeated individual figure becomes a mass and the observer becomes involved with the installation.

In his research he follows current and historical stories, which he transfers into new contexts. He creates wooden prototypes in a large-scale production, which he then transforms into unique sculptures by manipulating them with a chainsaw, cutting disc and a knife. Each piece is unique, although they appears as part of a large group. In this work step, Lussi pays a lot of attention to the physicality and the surroundings of his installations. By installing them in a room he explores the contrasts between public and intimacy, reality and illusion.
